A Touch of Hawaii

BY CONNIE KACHEL WHITE
WU Luau
As members of Women United, Joy Heinrichs ’00, right, and Nicki Soice share the goal of building a lasting endowment to help fund the multi-faceted work of the alumni association. As serious as that sounds, they certainly look like they’re having fun!

Arriving members of Women United for the Shockers were greeted by WuShock and Women United host Paula Alefs to a members-only WU Luau, complete with colorful leis, tropical drinks and a lavish spread of appetizers fit for Hawaiian royalty. Held poolside at Alefs’ east Wichita home on Sept. 25, the luau proved the perfect casual setting for WU members to get together and relax.

WuShock joins Paula Alefs in hosting members of
Women United for the Shockers at a poolside WU Luau
get-together the evening of Sept. 25 at Alefs’ east Wichita
home. Women United is a group of Shocker supporters
who recognize the importance of the WSU Alumni
Association and its mission of service to Wichita State
and its alumni.

Women United members describe the organization as being “a fun, fun group of Shocker women with a simple goal: to provide a lasting endowment that will help fund WSU Alumni Association operations.

Women United members pledge $1,000 per year, for a minimum of five years. In return, members are invited to unique WU events — no stuffy meetings, we promise!”

Past group events have included get-togethers at the homes of Kate Taylor, Martha Buford and Dana Fleming Mastio ’78, as well as last basketball season’s Bracket Chatter outing to Deano’s Grill & Tapworks.

The WU Luau easily joined the list of “no stuffy meetings” events, as evidenced by the easy flow of lighthearted conversation, not to mention the smiles and laughter. Even the weather cooperated with just a touch of Kansas wind to mimic Hawaii’s warm tropical breezes. And the poolside setting was simply stunning.

Among the luau-goers were Taylor, Rachel Allen ’01, Susie Anderson ’72/75, Mickey Armstrong ’45, Nancy Blackman, Cindy Carnahan ’73, Becky Clark, Junetta Everett ’79, Pam Hamrick ’70, Joy Heinrichs ’00, Bonnie Bing Honeyman ’70/76, Tracy Hoover, Debbie Kennedy ’94, Elizabeth King, Terri Moses ’80/90, Sharon Neff, Alberta Nichols, Margaret Opara ’92, Sharol Rasberry, Nicki Soice, Lisa Sutherland, Alissa Unruh ’86 and Paula Varner.
