In his large-scale, representational paintings, some of which were inspired by European landscapes and cathedrals, Nester employs colors that are, he says, "rather sober — that is to say, subdued." The artist also sees in his works the "vaguely impressionistic" influence of one of his University of Wichita mentors, Robert Kiskadden, who ranged from representational to impressionist to expressionist abstract works. Now retired, Nester taught at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo.
