Winning the 1989 NCAA College World Series as a Shocker whetted Greg Brummett's appetite for baseball. After graduating, Brummett '91 played for the San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox organizations.
Although his hopes of playing 15 years in the majors didn't materialize, his dream of a lifetime in baseball has.
He says, "I knew if I ever was away from baseball, I wouldn't be happy. So I chose to get into coaching." After stints as pitching coach at the University of North Carolina Charlotte and then the U.S. Air Force Academy, he is now head coach at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kan.
He says he strives to "teach the players in this generation to play with passion and heart every single day." He adds that there are more distractions for young players today, making it easier for them to lose focus.
Coach Brummett's own unflinching focus is on 30 different players — with 30 different personalities. His long-term goal, he says, is to pass on to his players his love for baseball's spirit of competition — and the competitive "mind games" the sport requires.
