President's Corner

BY DAVE DAHL '71/74

It continues to be great fun to be part of the WSU Alumni Association.

The Marcus Welcome Center has been a perfect venue for our Distinguished Speaker Breakfast Series, which once again is a resounding success. We’ve heard from sports heroes, space heroes, Fortune 500 company execs and theater moguls. My head is spinning with pride.

In October, we co-hosted Rockin’ the Roundhouse at Koch Arena. The Blues Brothers and Marilyn Monroe were hits, and with the help and generosity of many good people, plus a spectacular live-auction finale from Tom Devlin, Dan Taylor ’67 and Bob Geist ’64, we managed not only great fun but also great financial success.

Our magazine continues to get rave reviews, and we’re going online with a state-of-the-art website that you’ll find fascinating, informative and user-friendly. We hosted watch parties for our sports teams at Fox & Hound, to standing-room-only crowds. The Shockers are well on their way to winning the All Sports trophy in the Missouri Valley Conference for the third consecutive year, due in large part to excellent coaches, a super athletic staff headed by Jim Schaus and the administrative leadership provided by President Don Beggs.

In November, we hosted legendary, former voice of the Shockers, Gus Grebe, with the assistance of a few of our fine donors. Gus, I must admit, is in better shape than I am (although a great many octogenarians are in better shape than I am — all of these events are wearing me out!). We hosted the Alumni Awards banquet in January. It seems like we never run out of an abundance of worthy recipients who make us proud to be Shockers.

It’s a great time to be a Shocker! If you know of someone who should join us as an association member, give us a call. We’ll be glad to invite them to be part of our family — and part of the fun. There’s a lot more excitement to be had as we roll into spring. Hey, wait a minute. That’s Mike Kennedy outside honking his horn. We’re off to cheer on our men’s basketball team in the NCAA Tournament. What did I say? It’s always a great time to be a Shocker!
