Come Along on the Shocker Express

The WSU Alumni Association is offering three Shocker bus trips during the 2008-09 men’s basketball season. Plan now to board the Shocker Express to cheer on WSU against Creighton, Missouri State and their rivals in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in St. Louis. Trip packages include everything a fan needs to have a great time.

•   Join fellow Shockers on the road to Omaha, Neb., where WSU will take the court against the Creighton Bluejays in the 17,272-seat Qwest Center on Sun., Dec. 28.

•   The second Shocker Express trip will feature the Wichita State vs. Missouri State game slated for Wed., Jan. 14, 2009, in the brand new JQH Arena.

•  And don’t miss a game of 2009 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, scheduled for Thu.-Sun., March 5-8 in St. Louis.

In Wichita, men’s basketball watch parties for all away games — beginning with Old Spice Classic games Nov. 28-30 — are held at Fox and Hound Pub & Grille, 1421 Waterfront Parkway, Webb and 13th. Cheer for the Shockers in a great atmosphere, around great people — and sign up for your chance to win WSU gear at every game.

ASSOCIATION NEWS

New President

Dan Unruh

This July, Dan Unruh ’86 took up the gavel as alumni association president. A partner with InSite Real Estate Group LLC in Wichita, Unruh has been a real estate broker since 1987. He’s involved in commercial brokerage, commercial development and corporate real estate. As a director within a corporate real estate department, he’s been responsible for the acquisition and disposition of real estate parcels in most U.S. states and in more than 16 foreign countries.

As a student at Wichita State, Unruh won the prestigious Gore Scholarship. Among his many campus activities was serving as a Student Government senator. It was also as a student that he first became involved with the WSU Alumni Association — through the Student Alumni Association. During the 1985-86 academic year, he was the president of the SAA Ambassadors and in 1986 was recognized with Volunteer of the Month honors by the association. This fall, Unruh has graduated into even higher service with the alumni association. A lifelong Kansan, he is married to Alissa (Kamp) ’87. The couple have two children.

Joining Unruh on the association’s 2008-09 executive committee are Collin Stieben ’00, vice president of administrative programs and president-elect; Steve Cohlmia ’74, vice president of development programs; Bob Gutschenritter ’70/75, vice president of finance, secretary/treasurer; Kaye Monk-Morgan ’93/96, university programs vice president; Lynn Stephan ’64/92, vice president of alumni programs; Kathy Winslow ’04, vice president of membership and volunteer recruitment; and Ross Hollander ’73, immediate past president.

Wichita State faculty, administrators and staff help mold the future of students on a daily basis, and the WSU Alumni Association is taking note of these Shockers of influence through a special recognition program.

Cramer Reed
Cramer Reed

Among the first individuals to be recognized was the late D. Cramer Reed ’37. Dr. Reed was nominated by Peter Cohen, dean of the WSU College of Health Professions. Reed, the founding dean of both Wichita State’s health professions college and the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, played a vital role in the professional lives of many educators, health-care providers and community leaders.

Shockers of Influence is a web-based program designed to help capture and tell the stories of WSU faculty and staff who make a difference in the lives of others in the Shocker community.

Alumni, university friends and other Shockers are asked to make nominations online. As an enticement, individuals who submit selected entries will receive a $20 gift certificate to the WSU Bookstore.

There are a number of questions to ask yourself when thinking about making a submission: Who was there when you needed someone to help you over an educational hurdle? Who mentored you and helped you professionally? Who inspired you?

What's Your Favorite RSC Memory?

For the past 50 years, Wichita State's Rhatigan Student Center has served as the heart of campus. It would be nearly impossible to be a WSU alum and not have used the center in some memorable way.
