President's Corner

BY DAN UNRUH '86

Welcome to another year of academic excellence and wonderful memories from the campus of Wichita State. As we begin to add another chapter to the history of our beloved alma mater, I am filled with anticipation of what I know will be a great year for WSU and for our alumni association.

Serving as your president brings me full circle with this esteemed organization. It was over 20 years ago when I served as president of the WSU Student Alumni Association and worked alongside great role models like Don Stephan, Norm Cash, Dale Richmond, Becky Long, Charlie Evenson, Susan Pompeo — and a host of other enthusiastic supporters. I developed relationships with fellow students who I am proud and honored to call my friends to this day. The connection we students enjoyed with alums helped mold our character and prepare us for our careers. Along the way, our youthful exuberance managed to re-connect alums to campus life in a way that cannot be achieved by any other means.

We have much to look forward to as we work to advance the mission of the alumni association. We will continue to serve our members through the annual events we host. We will strive to connect with our student body so that they, too, will enjoy the advantages of sharing in the experiences of those who have come before them. And we will have a lot of fun doing it!

If you are an alum who enjoys the benefits that come with association membership, I look forward to having the chance to say “hello” at one of our events. If you haven’t taken advantage of the many opportunities to serve and participate, I hope you will make it a priority to allocate time to re-connect with your friends and fellow alums in support of WSU. If you can get back to campus, please come for a visit. If time and distance won’t allow you this privilege, take a moment to call or write someone you knew when you were a student. I promise that you will rekindle those fond memories that made you proud to be a Shocker.

What's Your Favorite RSC Memory?

For the past 50 years, Wichita State's Rhatigan Student Center has served as the heart of campus. It would be nearly impossible to be a WSU alum and not have used the center in some memorable way.
