Every fall semester since 1991, Wichita
State students have come together for Shocktoberfest, slated this year for Oct.
10-26.
This multi-event campus happening took the place of traditional homecoming ceremonies.
To complement Shocktoberfest, WSU will celebrate its first homecoming since 1990 this spring semester — Feb. 12-14.
Hosted by the WSU Alumni Association, Homecoming 2010 will be centered around the Shocker men’s basketball game against the Missouri State University Bears. In commemoration of the return of this tradition, we at The Shocker invited readers to e-mail their favorite homecoming memories, and we’ve already received our first recollection.
It’s from Bob Kerr ’75: “What I remember most was Homecoming 1970. That was my freshman year, and my fraternity was a participant in the float building and then in the parade through the city.
“I remember being up all night completing the float and then guarding the float from raids by other organizations. It probably sounds a bit infantile, but the bonding that I experienced with the rest of my pledge brothers was a genuine highlight.
“Naturally, after the float we all crashed for some sleep before we got up to go see the football game and then back to the house for a dance. It was a rich tradition and made Homecoming 1970 the one that is embedded in my memory.
"I am pleased the tradition is coming back. I urge all students to become involved in this experience — you won’t forget it.”
