WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI MAGAZINE
Summer 2003

Director's Corner

BY BRAD S. BEETS ’87

July 1 marks a new fiscal year for the association as well as sets in motion our annual volunteer-leadership changing of the guard.

I welcome our new board members and officers, including our incoming president, Terri Moses, and thank all who are finishing terms of service for their dedicated — and important — work on behalf of WSU and its alumni association.

My special thanks go to Jeff DeGraffenreid for his key leadership as our president.

As I write this message, I am looking forward to a great year ahead, filled with Shocker fun, of course, but also with serious challenges.

One of the issues we will be facing is striving to maintain the association’s level of service to the university, alumni and students during this time of economic uncertainty. Among the (hopefully temporary) changes we will be making in FY 2004 is producing three, not four, issues of this magazine.

We will be adding pages to these three issues so that our range of coverage will be roughly the same, because it’s our pleasure, and our mission, to let you know about the many and diverse accomplishments happening every day in our Shocker community.

AT THE CENTER

Shockers Return

Nineteen hundred fifty-three was the year that President Truman announced the development of the hydrogen bomb — and the year members of the University of Wichita’s senior class earned their college degrees.

Nerds, Radicals & Turkeys

It is a truth universally accepted that what Shockers want is a good time.

A Most Fashionable Affair

Shockers of every age — including Dee Anne and Haley Fahnestock — were out in style April 11 at the Olive Tree Banquet Hall.

Being the Ball

The 2003 Shocker Open — sponsored by the WSU Alumni Association and better known as “Be the Ball” Caddyshock III — invaded the links at Wichita’s Willowbend Golf Course April 28 and challenged golfers to some steep alumni competition.
