LOS ANGELES
Narrow Margin of Victory
David Eads ’84/86, Kathleen Graves ’69, Bill Little ’58/60, Mark Monroe ’80, Carol ’69 and Larry ’69/70 Schoenfeld and Hendry Wongso ’02 were among the Shocker fans who gathered before the WSU baseball game versus UCLA on March 22. And they were in for some excitement as the No. 26 Shockers narrowly pulled out a victory over the Bruins. 

MANHATTAN
Season Sweep

Joy ’00 and Brian ’96 Heinrichs hosted a group of Shocker alumni and friends at a Manhattan restaurant prior to the May 6 Wichita State vs. Kansas State baseball game. Guests included Ann ’78 and Kip ’82/96 Lee, Donalyn ’89 and Tim ’92 Rhodes and Dick ’68/72 and Jane Clark. The Shockers defeated K-State, 2-0, thus completing a season sweep of the Wildcats.

ST. LOUIS
Alumni Night

Joan ’55 and Tom ’59/67 Gilley and Jeff Howell ’00 were among the WSU alumni who attended College Alumni Night June 21 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The Shockers and other Cardinal fans enjoyed perfect baseball weather for St. Louis’ game against the Kansas City Royals. 

STATE OF KANSAS
Shocker Caravan Stops

Shockers across Kansas are invited to join in on the Shocker Caravan as it makes stops in four cities. Men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon is the featured speaker for the tour, which is slated to stop Aug. 19 in Great Bend, Aug. 21 in Kansas City, Aug. 27 in Topeka and Aug. 28 in Hutchinson. Joining Turgeon will be a number of other WSU coaches and special guests. 

WICHITA

Jim Rhatigan

Distinguished Speaker
Thu., Sept. 4; 7:30 a.m. — James J. Rhatigan, WSU dean emeritus of students, will talk about some of the highlights of his work with students during the 1960s, Olive Tree Banquet Hall. He is the first of six speakers scheduled in the 2003-04 WSU Distinguished Alumni Speakers Breakfast Series.

In the Company of Nurses
Debbie Kennedy ’94 was honored as Distinguished Nursing Alumnus during the WSU Nursing Alumni Society’s annual meeting in May. Attendees included Theresa Cooper ’93/94/01, Michael Goodwin ’73/76/80, Eileen Hawkins ’73/92, Anita Hutchison ’85, Maria Jackson ’87, Carla Lee ’72/75/84 and Karen Wheeler ’81/98. Society President Victoria Mosack ’80/92 emceed the event, which also featured speakers Peter Cohen, College of Health Professions dean, and Juanita Tate, chair of WSU’s School of Nursing.

Joyce DiDonatoRenowned Mezzo Soprano
Mon., Oct. 6;  7:30 a.m. — Joyce DiDonato ’92, award-winning mezzo soprano, will speak in the alumni association’s Distinguished Alumni Speakers Breakfast Series, Olive Tree Banquet Hall. DiDonato also will perform as part of WSU’s Connoisseur Series 7:30 p.m., Tue., Oct. 7, Miller Concert Hall, Duerksen Fine Arts Center.

Shocker Honors Scholars
Mon., Oct. 27 — The Fourth Annual Shocker Honors Scholar Banquet celebrates the academic successes of local high school juniors, who will learn more about educational opportunities at SU from alumni hosts and current students. Lillian Gattis ’84, Cramer Reed ’37, Gladys Alley ’75, Max ’57 and Lois ’56 Hubbard and DeAnne Fortney ’59/74 are members of the event planning committee. 

Rebecca Ediger

U.S. Protective Services
Mon., Nov. 10; 7:30 a.m. — Rebecca Ediger ’76/83, a WSU-educated physician assistant who is now the deputy assistant director for the U.S. Office of Protective Research in Springfield, Va., will speak in the alumni association’s Distinguished Alumni Speakers Breakfast Series, Olive Tree Banquet Hall.

Nineteen hundred fifty-three was the year that President Truman announced the development of the hydrogen bomb — and the year members of the University of Wichita’s senior class earned their college degrees.

The 2003 Shocker Open — sponsored by the WSU Alumni Association and better known as “Be the Ball” Caddyshock III — invaded the links at Wichita’s Willowbend Golf Course April 28 and challenged golfers to some steep alumni competition.
