WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI MAGAZINE
Spring 2014

From the Board Chair

BY DENIS DIEKER '77/80

Denis DiekerTekele Cotton. This Wichita State student-athlete caught my attention his freshman year and remains a favorite. He is a tenacious defender, but to call him a defensive specialist is an injustice because he contributes significantly more. He can be the leading scorer, the best rebounder, and do all the small things to assist in the success of his teammates. His work ethic, focus and determination are second to none. Tekele fills the gaps on defense and on offense, but his most important contribution is simply making the other players better.

In this pivotal period for our Alumni Association and the University, let's follow Tekele's example and be the component that helps all parts work together better. As we build on past success, we should strive to connect our alumni with all facets of our University team: our staff, the students, the faculty, the community, athletics, the WSU Foundation, and the administration. Let's work together to support the vision of Innovation Campus and growth at Wichita State.

We have a great appreciation for Debbie Kennedy leading us to new levels, but let's keep moving and improving. The Association membership stands at fewer than 6,200 — from a constituency base of over 145,000.Let's grow our membership. Remember, you don't need to have attended Wichita State to be a member. You simply need to have an affinity for our University. Imagine 10,506 members — enough to fill Charles Koch Arena. You know that Tekele Cotton and his teammates will fill the Roundhouse many times next year.

It's a great time to be a Shocker — and a member of our Association's uniquely Shocker team.
