Hoopla in Doo-Dah

BY CONNIE KACHEL WHITE

Scott DawsonScott Dawson '86, a Wichita-based illustrator, has a wide-ranging host of clients, including The Shocker. Among his most recent illustrative successes is winning the 2014 Wichita River Festival design competition, an annual contest he has won three times now.

"I've entered many times over a few decades, starting at WSU in the mid '80s," Dawson says. "I remember being inspired by David Lafleur's winning poster of a stylized blue horse, among many other samples of his. He came and talked to a WSU illustration class I took and really solidified my plan of being an illustrator."

Dawson has also been selected to create the 2015 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am illustration for PGA posters, tickets and other items. "Being an avid golfer, that was really exciting to be asked to do," he says. "I get to go out to Pebble Beach and sign posters during the event, and maybe meet some celebrities who take part as amateurs each year." Illustrating books is another focus for his artistic talents.

To date, he has completed interior illustrations for 10 books in author Lauren Tarshis' I Survived Series by Scholastic, and is looking forward to working on more – perhaps even I Survived the Hoopla in Doo-Dah?
