Dear Shockers:
We’ve certainly had an eventful spring, one filled with alumni coming together for all kinds of WSU happenings — from physician assistant, social work and other alumni society gatherings, to our university’s Ninth Annual Senior Breakfast, to watch parties and pregame parties that have drawn hundreds of Shockers out to show their spirited support for our talented baseball team.
Among the baseball events that your association sponsored or hosted this season was a tailgate party in a gravel parking lot near the baseball stadium at Oklahoma State, where regionals were played this year. The backdrop might not have been the most comfortable or looked the most festive, but, let me tell you, the Shocker fans who came out made this one of the parties of the season. We had so much fun, and I can’t help but think that all of the positive energy generated there that day had something to do with WSU going on to a super regional!
This spring, however, also brought us sadness with the loss of one of Shocker baseball’s best known and best loved fans, Rex McNichol. The husband of longtime WSU staff member Dot McNichol, Rex will be greatly missed. But he will be remembered — and he will be helping all of us celebrate our pride in WSU for a long time to come.
Funds from a planned gift to the university from the McNichols will be used to complete the alumni association’s project of creating displays of Shocker memorabilia. Taken together, these displays will tell the history of WSU — and serve as a fitting tribute to Rex and his love and support for Wichita State.
As the association welcomes new board members and officers, let me publicly recognize Ross Hollander, our outgoing president, for his wonderful leadership, support and commitment. Thanks, Ross!
Together for WSU,
