Shocker Zen & CaddyShock VI

BY CORI DODDS AND CONNIE WHITE

WuShock zen illustrationPerhaps the Shocker golfers of CaddyShock VI didn’t exactly “achieve total consciousness,” as was the golf tournament’s thematic goal. But they did achieve a fine, high level of golfing fun April 20 on the links of Willowbend Golf Club.

And the infamously unpredictable Kansas weather acted as if it actually did reach a state of Zen consciousness. Says Steve Cohlmia ’74, chair of the Shocker Open, about the calm, balmy day, “I kept having to pinch myself and ask if we were still in Kansas. Then I clicked my heels together three times and said, ‘I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.’ But, just so you know, I also don’t wear red shoes anymore!”

Serving along with Cohlmia on the tournament’s planning committee were Steve Carr ’75, Pat Crowley ’76/79, Bob Dwerlkotte ’75, Dick Elliott ’71, Dan Foley ’59, Tim Holder fs ’02 and Curt Lagree ’59/64.

Members of Intrust Bank’s team — comprised of Troy Jordan, Mark Dennett ’85, Finley Halsig fs ’00 and William Jones ’72 — proved to be the top-flight winners, each of whom took home a $100 gift certificate from the pro shop at Willowbend.

The Fahnestock Electric team of Eric Fahnestock, Darin Weidenheimer fs ’89, Rob Jacob and Brian Langlais played to a second-place finish.

The tournament was a success, in raising not only some $3,800 in support of the many activities and programs of the WSU Alumni Association, but also nearly $600 in support of Wichita State’s women’s golf program, headed by coach Chris Gomez. Shocker student-athlete golfers officiated the post-tournament putting contest (with its chance to win $5,000, which no one was lucky enough to pocket this time around), as well as helped out at holes that sported such competitions as longest drive, closest to the pin and longest putt.

Counted as corporate sponsors for the alumni association-hosted event were Budweiser, Community Bank, Fahnestock Electric, Kim Dwerlkotte Interior Design, Pepsi and Western Uniform and Towel Services Inc.

And hole sponsors for CaddyShock VI were BMG Sports Marketing, Classic Real Estate, Cochran Mortuary, Community Bank, Cornejo & Sons, Davis-Moore Chevrolet, Digital Office Systems, Dr. Sam and Jacque Kouri, Edward M. Plopa & Associates, Fahnestock Electric, Fox and Hound Pub & Grille, Grene Vision Group, House of Schwan, Howard’s Optical, Kim Dwerlkotte Interior Design, Mark Heidebrecht DDS, McKinney’s First Street Automotive, Patterson Dental Supply, Pepsi, Security Self Storage, Southwest National Bank, The Print Source and Western Uniform.
