Fall 2003

President's Corner

BY TERRI MOSES â??80/90

Time flies. Another academic year has begun and the first semester is almost over. Just a few months ago I began my term as President of the WSU Alumni Association. With the assistance of some very talented volunteers and a dedicated and resourceful staff, we have gotten off to a great start.

October was an outstanding month. We started with WuStock, the association’s 2003 Shocker Auction. Bryan Frye ’87/88, our event chairman, led an outstanding group of Shocker alumni and friends as we prepared for the association’s annual party and fund raiser. By all accounts, the event was successful on both fronts. We ended October with a banquet for area high school juniors. The alumni association hosts the event in partnership with the admissions office. Our goal is to get area students an early and positive look at Wichita State.

It’s November and our activities continue. In conjunction with Veteran’s Day, the association and the graduating class of 1952 presented a plaque to the university that honors veterans. The plaque was presented at halftime of the November 13th Wichita State-Emporia exhibition basketball game.

Speaking of basketball, the alumni association has several bus trips and watch parties planned. During the spring semester — on Feb. 12 to be exact — we will host our 48th Annual Alumni Awards Banquet, at which we’ll honor eight stellar university alumni and friends. (Please check out the story “League of Extraordinary Shockers.”) And as basketball season flows into softball and baseball season, we will continue to host events in conjunction with Shocker athletics.

We encourage you to join us throughout the year ahead as we continue to create and build “ties that last a lifetime.”
