CENTRAL ILLINOIS: Volleyball and Vittles

Bob Schutte ’67/69 and nearly 60 others gathered with the Central Illinois Alumni Chapter as they cheered on the Shocker volleyball team and then hosted a dinner for the team at a local restaurant on Sept. 27. 

KANSAS: Shocker Caravan 2003

This summer the Shocker Caravan, featuring coaches and special alumni guests, made stops in Kansas City and Topeka. On Aug. 21, guests from Kansas City were able to meet men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon, softball coach Tim Walton and fellow alumni residing in the area. Guests included April Beaty ’88, John Bulcock ’02, Nicole ’96 and Shad ’99 Rockstad, Joyce ’62 and Myron ’63 Hultgren, Vicki and Ron ’67 Tennissen, Pat Egan ’77/77 and Gerald Taylor ’73

The Caravan rolled into Topeka on Aug. 27 and featured Turgeon, head men’s tennis coach Kevin Kowalik, athletic director Jim Schaus and WSU Alumni Association President Terri Moses ’80/90. Alan ’88 and Holly ’91 Cobb welcomed attendees, who included Michelle and Eric ’90/90 Boling, Carol and Steven ’69 Naylor, Jim Mullins ’71, Ed Field ’72, Pete Bodyk ’88 and Gwynne and Michael ’86/89/94 Birzer

ST. LOUIS: March Madness

Die-hard Shocker fans should start making plans to attend the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in St. Louis March 5-8, 2004. This season, the team and fan hotel will be the Sheraton St. Louis City Center, located just one block from the Savvis Center. Space is limited, so fans should book early.

Class of ’54 Reunion

Plans are in the making for the Class of 1954’s 50-year reunion, slated for May 14-15, 2004. Watch for information in the mail.

Distinguished Speakers

The 2003-2004 WSU Distinguished Alumni Speaker Breakfast Series, which opened in September with a lecture by Dean Emeritus of Students Jim Rhatigan, continued on a high note with an Oct. 7 address by Joyce DiDonato ’92, an award-winning mezzo-soprano. Harrison Boughton, WSU professor emeritus of music, Elaine Bernstorf ’76/78/93, interim dean of WSU’s College of Fine Arts, and Lois Hubbard ’56, who presented DiDonato flowers on behalf of Mu Phi Epsilon, were among the more than 100 breakfast attendees.

On Nov. 10, breakfast was served up with a side of justice when Eric Melgren ’79, U.S. Attorney for the District of Kansas, was the featured speaker. Up next is Shocker Hall of Famer Lanny Van Eman ’62/65, Jan. 21, 2004.

Members of the WSU Nursing Alumni Society hosted orientation for new undergraduate and graduate nursing students, who were each presented a WSU lapel pin and treated to remarks from WSU President Don Beggs, Society President Michael Goodwin ’73/76/80 and College of Health Professions Dean Peter Cohen

Shocker Honors Scholar Banquet

To celebrate the academic successes of the area’s top high school juniors, WSU’s alumni association and undergraduate admissions teamed up to sponsor the Fourth Annual Shocker Honors Scholar Banquet on Oct. 27. Prospective students dined with alumni and current students, and learned about educational opportunities at WSU. Alumni hosts included Lisa Hansen ’86/98, Ross Hollander ’73, Ron Holt ’77, Kaye Monk-Morgan ’93/96, Derek Morgan ’96 and Chris Shank ’69.
