Shockers Forever Update

BY ASHLEE BAYSINGER '12, WSUAA ALUMNI RELATIONS ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

From manning Welcomefest tables at the beginning of the 2014-15 academic year to packing semester-end goodie bags for Shocker students studying for finals, Shockers Forever can close the book on another successful year of student alumni association activities and events.

This year, we were led by Margy Long, president, and Michaela Stephenson, vice president, as well as Emily Blount, Elissa Failes, Michaela Garrett, Kamika Hicks, Sierra Logan, and Margaret Ussery, who are all members of the Shockers Forever core group. With our growing membership, the core group took every hurdle with grace and soared through the year with enthusiasm and Shocker spirit.

We had two successful Dine with an Alum dinners, at which Shockers Forever members had the opportunity to network with WSU alumni who have built careers in various professions. “This evening is one of my favorites because we get a chance to talk with alumni and see how they have used their experiences at Wichita State to get them where they are today,” says Long, who adds that Dine with an Alum attendees and members of the core group are already looking forward to next year's event.

After a summer break from planning meetings, Shockers Forever will be back in action next fall, with a goal of engaging even more students in WSUAA activities, programs and projects.

At the beginning of the next academic year, our student group will have the privilege of talking to incoming freshmen during summer 2015 orientations. This will be a new opportunity for us to share our Shocker pride. The fall semester is going to bring new and exciting things for Shockers Forever!

Shocker fun under the big tent

The WSU Alumni Association's BAT Party was on May 5, before the Shockers took Tyler Field for a game against the Wildcats of Kansas State.

Bracket Chatter

Filling out NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament brackets netted some serious fun for members and guests of Women United for the Shockers, who gathered March 16 at Deano's Grill & Tapworks in Wichita for food, drink – and some collegial rivalry.

WSUAA's Shockers Forever Host Nearly Naked Run

No one – not organizers, nor sponsors or participants – was surprised by the cold weather during Homecoming 2015.

Shocker Legacy and "Drive Your Pride" Scholars

Recipients of two alumni association-administered scholarship programs – the WSU License Plate Scholarship and the Legacy Endowed Scholarship – were the center of attention during a congratulatory reception the evening of April 20 at the Woodman Alumni Center.

From the Chair

As my term as Chair ends, this memory reminds me that there is much more to complete with the changes in the Association. I will continue working to advance the organization as directed by Mindy McPheeters. Mindy is a great choice for the next Chair, and has shown strong leadership and commitment.
