As members of Wichita State’s Class of 1965 returned to campus for their 50 Year Reunion’s opening reception Oct. 1 at the Woodman Alumni Center, Courtney M. Marshall, president and CEO of the WSU Alumni Association, greeted each of them and their guests.

“I extend a most heartfelt welcome back to campus to each of you,” she said. “It’s a pleasure for us to host the slate of reunion events we have planned for you over the next few days. We’re looking forward to celebrating with you!”

Reunion events included campus tours, a class dinner at Wichita’s Candle Club, a jazz brunch at WSU’s new Shocker Hall and an Oct. 2 luncheon at the Marcus Welcome Center, where returning Class of 1965 members were introduced as the newest members of Wichita State’s 50 Year Club and presented commemorative medallions by James J. Rhatigan, WSU vice president emeritus of academic affairs.

Among the 50 Year Club members in attendance at the Friday luncheon were Frances Vannoy ’64, Gerald Tuckwin ’64, Orvin Kuhlmann ’61, Ann ’59 and John ’58 McCarty, Jerry Peterson ’57, Harold Walter ’57, Marjorie Swofford ’56, Bill Wentz ’55, Dorris Brant ’54, Pat Quinn ’52, Frank Farha ’51, as well as Alice Jones from the Class of 1940, Kathryn Grantham from the Class of 1948, and Jo Brown ’51, who led the singing of the Alma Mater at the close of the event.

“Being inducted into the university’s 50 Year Club is a milestone event — a real highlight of our Class of 1965 reunion festivities,” says Lynn Loveland, the director of alumni programming at the WSUAA who oversaw reunion plans.

“A great big thank you to Lynn and to everyone who worked to make this such a memorable reunion,” Myron Webster ’65/68 writes from his home in Lompoc, Calif. “It is amazing how people who had little interaction with one another can bond so quickly because of the Shocker experience we all had when we were students at this wonderful university. As much fun and as many experiences as we shared this weekend, only the surface was scratched. Probably we will never be reassembled as we were for this reunion, but the memories will last. I look forward to my next trip to Wichita and visiting the Woodman Alumni Center and seeing how everyone is doing and what exciting things you are working on!”
