Shocker Open: Fun in the Sun

Shocker Open participants enjoy the greens at Willowbend Golf Club on Sept. 5. The alumni association’s golf tournament, presented by the Butler Group, helps raise funds for student recruitment events, specifically the annual Shocker Honors Scholar Banquet.

Thanks to beautiful weather, generous sponsors and energetic golfers, the 2013 Shocker Open alumni golf tournament, presented by the Butler Group and held Sept. 5 at Wichita’s Willowbend Golf Club, concluded as a grand success!

Members of the Shocker Open’s top team based on score were Steve Cohlmia ’74, Sam Kouri hn ’01, Spencer Christian ’09 and Dave Jabara ’77. Carl Hebert ’04 won the tournament’s putting contest.

Proceeds from the Shocker Open, in which 118 golfers participated, support student recruitment, specifically the Shocker Honors Scholar Banquet, an event celebrating the academic accomplishments of the top 10 percent of Wichita-area high school juniors.

“It was a great, fun day for golf,” Hush says. “The golfers had a good time and at the same time helped support the alumni association’s student recruitment efforts.”

There were quite a few Wichita State alums happy they didn’t have to head back to class in August. To celebrate the occasion, they returned to campus for a party!

Nick Taylor ’04/05/07 energized the Rise & Shine crowd at a WSU Distinguished Alumni Speaker breakfast lecture Oct. 1 at the Marcus Welcome Center.

This coming February will mark my ninth year with the Alumni Association, and for the ninth year in a row (indeed, for years before that!) I can enthusiastically write: It’s an exciting time for the Alumni Association and Wichita State.
