COLORADO

Trek of Remembrance

A Trek of Remembrance was held Aug. 12-14 for those interested to visit the mountainside site of the 1970 Wichita State football plane crash, in which 31 Shockers lost their lives. A Colorado group of Shockers, including Carolyn (Howe) Harner ’65/68, Judy fs ’95 and Al ’61 Higdon and John Yeros ’73, as well as members of the Alpine Rescue Team, joined a contingent from Wichita led by Debbie ’94 and Mike ’71 Kennedy. Also taking part from Wichita was Art Louvar ’73/79 and two members of Shockers Forever, the student alumni association, Tia Bodine and Britaney Wehrmeister, both seniors.

Meet and Greet

Topeka-area Shockers came together for an alumni reception April 27 at the Shawnee Golf Club. Special guests from WSU included Eric Sexton ’87/92, director of athletics, and Wade Robinson, vice president for Campus Life and University Relations.


WICHITA

Con“GRAD”uation!

Tue., Nov. 29; noon — Congraduation, Rhatigan Student Center Ballroom, third floor. This congratulatory lunch celebrates fall 2011 Shocker graduates and features addresses from WSU President Don Beggs and WSU Alumni Association President Tyler Heffron ’02. A senior video also will be debuted. 

Homecoming: Mardi Gras

Mon., Feb. 20-Sat., Feb. 25 — Homecoming. Save these dates in February to take full advantage of a slate of exciting homecoming activities. Check in at wichita.edu/alumni for details as they become available.

Honors Banquet

Tue., Oct. 11; 7 p.m. — Shocker Honors Scholar Banquet, Preferred Health Systems Multipurpose Center, Charles Koch Arena. The purpose is twofold: to honor and recognize the academic achievements of local high school juniors who are in the top 10 percent of their class and to introduce them to Wichita State. The students are selected from 35 area high schools, and their introduction to WSU has proven successful since some 40 percent of the banquet’s student attendees go on to enroll at Wichita State. Show your pride by serving as a table host and/or sponsoring a student meal (a $25 contribution).

RnR: Around the World

Sat., Oct. 1; 6 p.m. — Rockin’ the Roundhouse, Charles Koch Arena. RnR, the premier fundraising event of the WSU Alumni Association and WSU Athletics is sporting an around-the-world theme this year and offers food, drinks, entertainment and silent and live auctions. Rockin’ the Roundhouse tickets are $100 per person.

Shocker Travel Adventures

June 8-19, 2012 — Baltic Treasures, Copenhagen to Stockholm with Oceania Cruises. Voyage aboard Oceania Cruises’ luxurious Nautica to some of northern Europe’s most legendary ports. Discover Baroque palaces, historic monarchies and stunning harbors as you sail the Baltic Sea to Germany, Denmark, Poland, Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Russia and Finland. AT THE CENTER

Winning Golfers Hit Stride

After 18 holes of golf under clear skies at Wichita’s Willowbend Golf Club, tournament officials tabulated player scores and announced the top finishing three teams in three flights – including first-flight winners Sammie Lane, Joe Poston ’75, Zac Potter ’10 and Kevin Seal.

New Venue for The Bash

After four years of being staged at the Woodman Alumni Center’s parking lot, the 5th annual We’re Not Back to School Bash was moved across campus to the Duerksen Amphitheatre.

Association News

Tyler Heffron ’02, who’s a native of Wellington, Kan., began his year-long post as president of the WSU Alumni Association July 1, taking up the gavel from Steve Cohlmia ’74.

Rise & Shine

The first of five featured presenters in the 2011-12 WSU Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series are Carol (McAdoo) ’72 and Norman ’73 Rehme, who will take the morning stage Thursday, Oct. 20 in the Rhatigan Student Center.
