Director's Corner

BY BRAD S. BEETS '87 - ASSOCIATION DIRECTOR

This spring has been a busy time. We have hosted a number of successful events, including the Senior Breakfast for our newly graduating Shocker alumni, the Nursing Alumni Society’s annual meeting during which the Distinguished Nursing Alumni Award is presented, the 50-Year Reunion in honor of members of the Class of 1954 and Rumble in the Jungle, our Spring Fling event held at the Sedgwick County Zoo.

For me, one of the most memorable happenings this spring was the Distinguished Alumni Speaker Breakfast Series lecture given in April by Thurston Briscoe ’74, a veteran of National Public Radio, who is now the program director of WBGO, a consistently top-rated jazz station that serves the New York City area. What struck me most about Thurston was not only his passion for his career in radio but also his love for Wichita State, the place that, he says, "gave me access" to the skills, knowledge and connections necessary for success.

Thurston’s success story is one we as Shockers can celebrate. As a WSU alum and the director of your alumni association, I encourage us all to acknowledge the key roles Wichita State has played in our individual successes and to share our stories with one another. We should show the pride we feel as Shockers to everyone we come in contact with — to proudly announce: "I Am Wichita State!"

Have a great Shocker Summer!

President's Corner

Vision, by definition, means “a mental image produced by the imagination.” In the past several months, I have found that the imaginations of Wichita State University alumni, WSU Alumni Association staff and WSU faculty and staff are vivid and full of passion for Wichita State.
